Raheem Sterling has called on society to”wake up” and realise footballers have been”human beings just doing their jobs” as gamers continue to be abused.
A variety of players, including Tammy Abraham and Sterling’s fellow England internationals Marcus Rashford, are targeted online after lost penalties this season.
Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku was racially abused by Cagliari fans during a Serie A game a week, also Sterling says things needs to change.
He told Sky Sports News:”It’s simple to state what happens next but there’s a great deal of folks behind a computer monitor. Those are those that are disappointing and believe they can get away with stuff like this.
“We are in 2019 and we’re still talking about this. I can not say I have the answer to prevent it .
“The people doing it want to awaken and understand it’s a new age and discrimination isn’t something anybody should confront.
“We need to grow up as a society and realise we are just out here in our tasks. We are human beings and we all have feelings.
“It’s a touchy issue but I can’t tell you I’ve got the exact answer. However, as a society we all need to do better and appreciate each other more.”
Sterling known to become passed a stadium ban when he was one of a number of England players to become racially abused throughout the group’s win there last season, and was outspoken in calling racism out throughout his career.
Speaking before England triumph over Bulgaria on Saturday, Marcus Rashford called to do much more to prevent their customers abusing others online.
“For me personally, it is too easy to do anything you like on the world wide web,” Rashford said. “Any of us today could proceed and create stories and write what we need under anyone’s posts and no one would ever understand.
“The solution is not hard to figure out – if you’d like to show identification to create an account which means everybody can only have one account.
“For me personally, there’s hundreds of thousands of people who use my name on social media and they can write what they enjoy.
“But people are talking out and people are listening hopefully we could put it .”
